Introduction

The steps in this section will go over how to install KeePass on your local machine and will go over how to create strong passwords for each service that you'll be signing up with. If you are already using another password manager, such as LastPass, then you can skip to the Generate Secure Passwords for the Various Services section below but you'll need to figure out how to generate and store secure passwords using your password manager.

Download KeePass

Open a browser and go to: https://keepass.info/download.html
Click the green Download Now button for the latest Portable version. This will take you to the SourceForge website. Wait about five to ten seconds and then you should be automatically prompted to save the file.
Save the file to your Desktop.
Once the file has finished downloading and saving to your Desktop, minimize all of your windows and go to you Desktop.
Right-click on the KeePass zip file and select the option to extract the file.
Browse to the extracted folder and then double-click on KeePass.exe.

Configure KeePass

Come up with a strong KeePass master password. Make your KeePass master password at least 15-characters long and use a mix of lower-case, upper-case, numbers and symbols in your password. Go over the following article, which explains how to create a strong password:

NOTE: Be sure to create a very strong master password for your KeePass database. For extra security, make your KeePass password 20-characters long and use a mix of lower-case, upper-case, numbers and symbols in your password.

How to Use KeePass

If you already have KeePass open, then close it.
Browse to the location of where you've saved your new KeePass database file and then double-click it to open it. KeePass will now open and will prompt you for your Master Password.
Type in your master password and then click the OK button.
In KeePass, navigate to Entry → Add Entry.... This will bring up the Edit Entry window.
In the Title field, type test.
Click the Key icon to the right of the Repeat field and then click Open Password Generator.... This should bring up a Password Generation Options window.
